Traveling to Rara Park is not suitable for families with small children. There are no cozy hotels and comfortable conditions here. Tourists are offered trekking, living in tents with cooking on a fire. Since there are no settlements in the park, the animals feel entirely free here. This is a real jungle, where it is not safe during the day and dangerous at night.
The best time to visit the park is from May to September. This is the time when there is no rain, and nature is blooming and fragrant. The centre of the park is Lake Rara. Its shape is unique – almost regular oval.
This is a rather deep lake, more than 150 meters deep. Snow trout is found in the depths of the lake. Fir, oak, Himalayan cypress and other trees grow on the banks. Dense thickets of rhododendron and juniper are replaced by birches and oaks, which are more familiar to our eyes. There are low mountain ridges around the lake, which are very pleasant to travel on horseback.

In the 1970s, the Rara Daha (the Nepalese name for the lake) was incorporated into the less touristy Rara Lake National Park. Its inhabitants have moved to the Terai, but the guardians have remained on the paths of what was originally a hunting reserve (now a protected area). Along the coast of the lake, you can visit the traditional alpine-style houses of the guardians and come across the steles of the Malla kings.
The visit to the lake can be combined with that of the famous Kathmandu, formerly known as the “Wooden Temple” ( Kasthamandap ). The city rises about 1400 meters high in the splendid setting of the Himalayan range. The must-sees of a visit are Durbar Square, the home of Kumari, the child goddess, and the Royal Palace.
The most visited town in the western mountain range is Jumla (located at 2434 m), near the Tila River. This village has retained a Tibetan aspect. To visit the temple dedicated to Sjrii Chandan Nath, who drained the lake on the territory where Kalangra (old name of Jumla) arose by killing the two “naga” (snake-men) who lived there.
Jumla begins the trek that leads to the lake passing through Ghorasain and then to Jaljala Chaur (3270 m). This is not a trek suitable for beginners: the route has many ups and downs and therefore, can be challenging.
